Omega Oils: What Are They And Why Do We Need Them?

You may have heard that eating fatty fish is important for getting your Omega 3 fix, but what exactly is Omega-3, and do we really need to eat fish to get it?
We’ll dive into all things omega oils and share with you why omega-3 fish oils are important for your health, how to incorporate them into your diet, and which omega oil is right for you.
What Are Omega Oils?
Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid that our bodies need to function optimally. However, we can’t produce it naturally, so we need to obtain it through the foods we eat.

While fatty fish isn’t the only food that is rich in omega oils, it is one of the most potent sources of the nutrient.

Learn more about what omega oils are and how the different types of omega oils vary.
Where Are Fish Oil Omega-3s Found?
There are three main types of omega-3 that can be found in a range food sources.
EPA and DHA Omega 3 Oils
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are long-chain fatty acids that are found in seafood, especially fatty fish like tuna, cod, salmon, and sardines.

The Heart Foundation recommends that we eat 2-3 servings of fatty fish per week to support our health.
ALA Omega Oil
The third omega-3 source is plant-based. It’s known as alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA for short. ALA is predominantly found in plant-based foods such as flaxseeds, walnuts, chia seeds, and hemp seeds.

Our body converts ALA into long-chain fatty acids during digestion. While the conversion isn’t as efficient when eating ALA-rich foods as it is when eating fatty fish, it does provide a great alternative for vegans and vegetarians who wish to steer clear of animal products.
What Are The Benefits of Omega-3 Fish Oils?
Omega oils are integral to the health and function of our bodies. The benefits of consuming omega-3 oils are abundant.

Whether you choose to take yours in the morning, afternoon, or evening won’t matter as long as you stay consistent with your daily intake.

Taking omega oils with food is equally important. This maximises the absorption rate, helping you get the most your of your supplement.

How you choose to incorporate omega oils into your food is completely up to you – there’s no right or wrong way.

You can drizzle it on your salads and stir it through your pastas. Or, you can take a leaf from Victoria Devine’s book, podcast host of She’s On The Money, and add it to your breakfast!
Our Omega-3 Oils Story
Melrose was established in Melbourne during the late ‘70s, and fast became Australia’s leading healthy organic oil manufacturer.

Our founder, a chemist working in the pharmaceutical industry, saw preventive medicine as the future and soon realised the modern diet was deficient in omega-3s. Specifically, he set out to address the imbalanced omega-3:6 ratio.

Upon discovering the richest plant-based source, flaxseed oil, Melrose became ‘first in flax’ with the first bottles sold in 1984, pioneering the use of daily health oils in Australia.

In the early ‘90s, Melrose began producing cod liver oil. This later extended to liquid fish oil upon the request of a renowned rheumatologist who, needing a superior dosage form, prescribed it for arthritis patients.

Today, Melrose offers a comprehensive range, including both plant-based and ocean-derived omega oils to support general health and well-being.

Melrose Omega Oils

You’ve probably heard about eating enough fatty fish to ensure you get enough Omega-3, but what exactly is Omega-3, and do we really need to eat fish to have enough?

Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid. This means it’s an essential nutrient for humans, yet our body’s can’t make Omega-3 fats on their own, so we need to obtain them through diet.

Omega-3’s have been linked to everything from brain, heart, eye, joint and skin health with recent studies suggesting they may play a positive role in our overall mood too.

There are 3 main types of omega 3, which are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and the long chain omega 3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

The longer chain fatty acids EPA and DHA are found in fish and seafood, particularly oily fish such as Sardines, Mackerel, Salmon, Tuna and Cod. The heart foundation recommends 2 – 3 serves of oily fish per week to meet the recommended intake.

ALA is found in plant sources such as Flaxseeds, walnuts, chia seeds and hemp seeds. ALA is converted in the body to EPA and DHA. Plant-sources of ALA make a great option for those following a vegetarian diet. It’s worth noting however that ALA is not converted very efficiently by the body which is why fish-based sources of Omega-3 are generally recommended, and in lower dosages.

Melrose have a range of fish and plant-based omega-3 rich oils to complement your diet. Our premium oils are sourced ethically and with the highest quality standards in place. All of our fish oils are third party tested for heavy metals and toxins and are purified resulting in a light texture and appearance. Each fish oil is lightly flavoured with no fishy taste.
